Widia tips top stud performance
March 18, 2002 - It was in 1926, that
WIDIA came to be known world over - derived from WIe
DIAmont, meaning (in German) "like diamond"
- as the first tungsten carbide sintered hard metal
on industrial scale.
In the beginning was speedsteel; it was a profitable
and important product which held up well in the competition
with other brands. In pot smelters wrought iron was
alloyed with tungsten and chrome to produce a tooling
steel which allowed 4-5 times higher cutting speeds
than former tools made from carbon steel. Soon enough
though, a new cutting metal sold by the German company
Krupp under the name of "Widia" was being
retailed and took a substantial share of the speedsteel
market.
Under Magnus Tigerschiöld's management research
began in 1929 and soon enough he discovered that the
new Widia metal was not a steel type at all, but instead
an alloy consisting of tungsten carbide with a small
component of cobalt added. The result was a fine-grained
and hard metal, heat resistant enough to withstand cutting
speeds two to three times that of the finest speedsteel.
Easywalker has combined this alloy, the hardest material
known, into the tip of each easywalker® stud to
ensure the most durable product for their customer.

Horseshoes
Go High-Tech The Easywalker® Advantage
For Immediate Release
- May 15, 2002
People who have been around horses long enough have
seen all sorts of plastic and rubber horseshoes come
and go over the years. Everyone has been waiting for
someone to get it right. Well, after years of development,
and four years of trials involving 300 horses, the day
of the high-tech synthetic horseshoe has finally come.
Now available in Canada, these distinctive green and
yellow synthetic shoes, called 'easywalkers'®, have
taken Europe by storm. Finally, the equestrian world
can take advantage of all the latest developments in
synthetic material technology that the rest of the sports
world has benefited from for years. "It's incredible
to think that although modern life has influenced almost
everything, no-one until now has managed to come up
with a new design for the horseshoe." Says Karl
Forstner, Farrier and inventor of the easywalker®.
"They have tried, but there was just nothing that
had the durability of the metal horseshoe. In the past
people tried using plastic but it did not have the staying
power of metal. My team and I have spent five years
coming up with the easywalker®, and we have used
all the latest technology that has gone into making
running shoes so durable and high-performance, and translated
it into technology for the new horseshoes."
Injection-molded with 80 tons of pressure, these horseshoes
have two main parts. The green base material of the
shoe is made of extremely durable polyurethane, and
compliments the natural flexibility of the hoof while
providing stability, all with the purpose of reducing
the risk of injury to your horse. The yellow portions
of the shoe are the 'anti-shock' elements, made of highly
wear-resistant synthetics, cushioning and protecting
the hoof from impact and vibrations. Taken together,
these elements form the foundation of the easywalker®.
Beyond the performance of the shoe, a lot of thought
was put into making the shoe functional for the Farrier.
The shoe provides 8 standard nail holes, just like a
metal shoe, and comes with adjustable toe and side clips
and the outside and heel can be shaped to fit by cutting
the excess and rasping to finish. This strong and lightweight
shoe comes in 5 sizes and has the ability to add studs.
The easywalker plus® comes with an integrated plate
perfect for therapeutic use or eventing to reduce risk
of stone bruising, and can be adapted for snow and mud
conditions.
Launched in Europe in the fall of 2001, and currently
undergoing Canadian trials in Alberta, the shoes have
demonstrated high durability, wearability, and performance.
These trials include disciplines ranging from reining
to jumping and pleasure riding.
The Austrian easywalker® team will be conducting
a clinic and certifying Smiths and Farriers at the World
Blacksmithing Championships to be held during the 2002
Calgary Stampede (July 5-7). To register contact Kim
Edgecombe of Prodox Resource Group Ltd. 1-866-995-4100.
Just a thought: You wear Cavallos or Ropers for your
performance and comfort, isn't it about time you did
the same for your horse?
